Beyond Logic: Why I Believe Science Explains the Universe, While Astrology Invites Us to Reflect on Our Place Within It By Dr. Lochani Kavindi

There is a question I have often been asked throughout my academic and professional journey.

"How can someone who values scientific research, higher education, critical thinking, and evidence-based decision-making also have an interest in astrology?"

For many people, the two appear fundamentally incompatible.

Science is often associated with facts.

Astrology is often associated with belief.

One is expected to explain reality.

The other is frequently dismissed as mythology or superstition.

I understand why this perception exists.

Yet after years of academic study, professional experience, international exposure, and observing human behaviour across different cultures, I have reached a different conclusion.

I do not believe science and astrology necessarily compete with one another.

I believe they attempt to answer fundamentally different questions.

One seeks to understand how the universe works.

The other, at least for me, encourages reflection on how we move through life within that universe.

Science Explains Mechanisms

Science has transformed civilisation.

From modern medicine to aviation, artificial intelligence, engineering, energy systems, and space exploration, scientific inquiry has expanded humanity's understanding in extraordinary ways.

Its greatest strength is not certainty.

Its greatest strength is its willingness to question itself.

Scientific knowledge evolves because it welcomes evidence that challenges previous assumptions.

That intellectual humility is one of humanity's greatest achievements.

As someone who values research and academic inquiry, I believe scientific thinking should remain the foundation for understanding the physical world.

When science provides evidence, we should respect it.

When evidence changes, our understanding should evolve with it.

Yet Human Life Is More Than Equations

Despite remarkable scientific progress, there remain questions that science alone cannot fully answer.

Why do two individuals experience the same event yet derive completely different meanings from it?

Why do periods of adversity shape some people into extraordinary leaders while leaving others emotionally defeated?

Why do timing, intuition, coincidence, and personal transformation often feel profoundly significant to those experiencing them?

Science can often explain the mechanisms surrounding these experiences.

It does not always explain the meaning individuals attach to them.

And meaning has always been central to human existence.

Throughout history, philosophy, spirituality, literature, religion, psychology, and symbolic traditions have all attempted to explore dimensions of life that extend beyond measurement alone.

Why Astrology Continues to Fascinate Humanity

Astrology has survived for thousands of years.

Not because it has become an accepted scientific discipline.

But because it continues to resonate with millions of people searching for perspective.

For me, astrology is not about surrendering responsibility for life to planetary positions.

It is not a substitute for effort, education, or rational thinking.

Instead, I see it as a symbolic language that encourages reflection.

It reminds me to pause.

To consider patterns.

To think about timing.

To examine my own behaviour.

Whether those reflections originate from celestial symbolism or from my own subconscious mind is, in many ways, secondary.

The reflection itself has value.

The Danger of Living Without Reflection

Modern society celebrates productivity.

We measure success through income, titles, visibility, and achievement.

Yet many people spend remarkably little time understanding themselves.

They master technology but not temperament.

They understand markets but not motives.

They predict economic trends yet remain strangers to their own emotional patterns.

Whether one turns to psychology, philosophy, meditation, spirituality, or astrology, the deeper purpose should never be prediction.

It should be self-awareness.

Because a life lived without reflection often becomes a life lived on autopilot.

Life Cannot Always Be Reduced to Data.

As someone who deeply values analytical thinking, I also recognise its limitations.

Not everything meaningful can be quantified.

Love cannot be fully measured.

Wisdom has no universally accepted formula.

Trust cannot be expressed through a single equation.

Purpose has no laboratory instrument.

Some of the most important dimensions of human existence are experienced before they are explained.

Science teaches us how to measure.

Life often teaches us what truly matters.

The two are not always in conflict.

Sometimes they simply operate in different dimensions of understanding.

Humility Is the Beginning of Wisdom

History repeatedly reminds us that certainty can be dangerous.

Many ideas once considered impossible later became accepted scientific knowledge.

Likewise, many deeply held beliefs have been abandoned when evidence proved otherwise.

This is why intellectual humility matters.

Humility allows us to say:

"I believe."

It also allows us to say:

"I may still have more to learn."

To me, that is not weakness.

It is wisdom.

Living Between Reason and Wonder

Perhaps modern society has created a false choice.

We are often encouraged to believe we must choose between reason and wonder.

Between science and symbolism.

Between evidence and meaning.

I believe life is richer than that.

I choose to respect science because it explains the physical universe with extraordinary precision.

I also choose to remain open to symbolic traditions that encourage introspection, humility, and personal growth.

Not because they replace evidence.

But they remind us that human existence is not lived only through logic.

It is also lived through hope, purpose, imagination, and reflection.

Final Reflection

Whether one believes in astrology or not is ultimately a personal decision.

What matters more is how we choose to live.

Do we become kinder?

More disciplined?

More compassionate?

More self-aware?

More responsible for our actions?

No constellation can replace personal accountability.

No horoscope can substitute for hard work.

No symbolic system can eliminate the importance of character.

Our future is ultimately shaped by the choices we make, the values we uphold, and the lives we build with intention.

For me, science provides the tools to understand the world.

Astrology reminds me to reflect on my journey through it.

And perhaps there is room in a thoughtful life for both curiosity and critical thinking.

Because the wisest minds are rarely those who claim to know everything.

They are often those who never stop asking meaningful questions.
